Is This Right for You?

✓ Good Fit If You:

  • Have strong math and spatial reasoning skills
  • Enjoy working with premium materials and finishing details
  • Appreciate problem-solving and custom design challenges
  • Want to blend artistry with technical precision

⚠ Watch Out If:

  • You have repetitive strain issues or arthritis
  • You're sensitive to wood dust or finishing chemicals
  • You dislike detailed planning and measurement

🔍 The Dark Reality

Cabinet work is meticulous and demanding. You'll stand at benches for 8 hours, repeatedly gripping, measuring, and fitting. Wood dust accumulation can cause respiratory issues if ventilation is poor. Chemical exposure from finishes (lacquers, stains, adhesives) requires careful handling. Rush projects mean tight deadlines and high-stakes precision work. The custom market is competitive—keeping clients happy demands perfection on every piece.

A Day in the Life

Morning: Design & Layout

You review client specifications for a custom kitchen cabinet set. You calculate material quantities, create cut lists, and program the CNC router for component cutting. You inspect incoming lumber for quality and grain matching.

Afternoon: Assembly & Joinery

You assemble cabinet boxes using precision joinery (mortise-and-tenon, dovetail, pocket holes). You fit drawers, install slides, and hang doors with careful alignment. Quality control is critical—tolerances are tight.

Morning: Production Planning

You review architectural specifications for hospital casework and office built-ins. You organize the job sequence and allocate shop resources. You source special materials and finishes to match design specifications.

Afternoon: CNC Work & Finishing

You program and operate CNC equipment for complex profile cutting. You hand-finish edges, sand surfaces to fine grits, and apply stains and lacquers. You package components for on-site assembly and installation.

Morning: Batch Production

You're working on a production run of 50 desk units. You optimize the cutting sequence, rip components, and set up assembly jigs. You coordinate with team members on parallel tasks to maximize efficiency.

Afternoon: Quality & Packing

You inspect finished furniture for defects, sand any rough spots, and apply final finishes. You package units carefully for shipment, creating assembly instructions and labeling parts. You document quality assurance checkpoints.
