Is This Trade Right For You?

You're physically strong and enjoy demanding, hands-on work

You work well in fast-paced team environments with clear goals

You take pride in contributing to visible, lasting infrastructure projects

Safety-first mindset and willingness to follow protocols rigorously

Physically demanding: heavy lifting, climbing, working at heights, repetitive motions

Weather exposure: working outdoors year-round in Canadian climates

Job mobility: contracts are project-based, requiring flexibility and relocation

The Reality: Construction craft workers form the backbone of Canada's infrastructure. Every project is unique, deadlines are firm, and safety is non-negotiable. Early mornings, variable hours, weather delays, and job site hazards are routine. Long-term success depends on building a strong safety record and developing specialized skills.

Day in the Life

Pre-Shift & Setup (6:00–7:00 AM)

Arrive early for tailgate safety meeting on a downtown office tower. Review the day's tasks, hazard assessment, and site-specific safety procedures. Check equipment and grab materials needed for concrete forming or steel rigging.

Production Work (7:00 AM–3:30 PM)

Assemble concrete forms on the 12th floor, coordinate with other crews, and ensure proper alignment before pouring. Lift heavy materials using rigging systems, communicate with crane operators, and maintain continuous focus on safety protocols.

Site Preparation & Demolition (6:00–10:00 AM)

Demolition crew starts with heavy equipment operation, breaking concrete, and carefully removing hazardous materials. Ensure proper waste segregation and dust control. Work as part of a large team on a highway expansion project.

Debris Removal & Preparation (10:00 AM–3:30 PM)

Clear debris, operate skid steers, and prepare subgrades for new asphalt or concrete placement. Manage traffic control, communicate with heavy equipment operators, and maintain site cleanliness and safety standards.

Confined Space & Scaffold Erection (6:00–8:00 AM)

Begin by erecting and securing scaffolding for refinery work. Conduct pre-use inspections, ensure fall protection systems are in place, and verify all certifications. Check atmospheric conditions before entering confined spaces.

Material Handling & Support (8:00 AM–4:00 PM)

Assist specialized trades (welders, electricians, insulators) by transporting materials, maintaining safety perimeters, and operating hoists. Coordinate with multiple contractors on a complex renovation project in an operating industrial facility.
