Year 1 Topics

Study each topic below — these are the core knowledge areas tested in Year 1. Build a solid foundation here before advancing to Year 2 material.

📖Tractor Systems
  • Drivetrain: engine → transmission → differential → final drives
  • PTO (Power Take-Off): 540 RPM (small implements) and 1000 RPM (large)
  • 3-point hitch: Cat I (small), Cat II (medium), Cat III (large tractors)
  • 4WD vs MFWD (Mechanical Front Wheel Drive); ballasting for traction
💡Diesel Engine Fundamentals
  • 4-stroke cycle: intake, compression, power, exhaust
  • Compression ignition: no spark plug — heat of compression ignites diesel
  • Common rail fuel injection (CRDI): high pressure 1800–2000 bar
  • Turbocharger: increases air density for more power; Tier 4 emissions: DEF system
📖Hydraulic Systems
  • Open centre: fluid circulates at low pressure when no demand
  • Closed centre: pump builds pressure on demand
  • Load sensing: pump output matches demand
  • Draft control: maintains constant implement depth; remote hydraulic couplers
🔌Electrical & Starting Systems
  • 12V negative ground standard
  • Alternator: 90-120A typical on modern tractors
  • CAN bus: Controller Area Network — all modules communicate digitally
  • Diagnostic codes (DTCs): check using ag-specific scan tool; battery 12.7V when charged
🦺Implement Attachment & Safety
  • PTO driveline: shields must be intact — entanglement risk
  • Hitching 3-point: tractor reversed to implement — check clearance
  • Implement locking pins must be fully engaged
  • Never work under raised 3-point; ballast required for heavy attachments
💡Basic Maintenance
  • Engine oil: check daily, change per hours (typically 250 hrs)
  • Hydraulic/transmission fluid: check level and quality
  • Air filter: clean or replace per restriction indicator
  • Coolant: check concentration (−40°C protection); grease fittings 50-hour interval

Red Seal Topics

Study each topic below — these are the core knowledge areas tested in Year 1. Build a solid foundation here before advancing to Year 2 material.

📖Precision Agriculture (GPS)
  • GNSS guidance: RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) ±2.5cm accuracy
  • Section control: auto-turns off individual boom sections to prevent overlap
  • Variable rate application (VRA): applies inputs at different rates based on map
  • ISOBUS (ISO 11783): standard interface between tractor and implement terminals
📖Transmission Types
  • Powershift: clutchless shifting under load
  • CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission): infinite ratio selection, Fendt Vario, John Deere IVT
  • Wet clutch packs: hydraulically engaged, oil-cooled
  • Final drive ratios: affect ground speed and drawbar pull
📖Combine Harvester Systems
  • Header: cuts and feeds crop
  • Feeder house: elevates to threshing cylinder
  • Rotor or cylinder: threshes grain from straw; concave: fixed element grain separates
  • Cleaning shoe: sieves and fans separate grain from chaff; grain tank and unloading auger
🔧Sprayer & Application Equipment
  • Boom sprayer: nozzles, pressure (200-400 kPa), boom height (45-55cm above target)
  • Nozzle types: flat fan (field crops), flood (fertilizer), air induction (drift reduction)
  • Calibration: output per hectare = flow per nozzle × nozzles per m / speed
  • PMRA compliance required for all pesticide application
🔌Electrical Diagnostics
  • CAN bus diagnostics: address each module separately
  • Voltage drop test: measure across connector under load (max 0.5V acceptable)
  • Resistance tests: opens and shorts
  • Oscilloscope: waveform analysis for sensors; ag-specific service software required
🔥Welding & Fabrication Repair
  • MIG welding: most used in field
  • High-strength steel (HSLA): preheat may be required
  • Hardox wear plate: abrasion resistant — special consumables
  • Plasma cutting for field repairs; hard-face welding extends life of soil-engaging parts
