Year 1 Fundamentals

Study each topic below — these are the core knowledge areas tested in Year 1. Build a solid foundation here before advancing to Year 2 material.

📖Dozer Types & Components
  • Crawler dozer (track): high traction on soft/rough ground
  • Wheel dozer: faster on hard surfaces
  • Blade types: straight (S), universal (U), semi-U (SU), angle blade, 6-way blade
  • Ripper: rear attachment for breaking hard material
  • Undercarriage: tracks, rollers, idlers, sprocket
📖Machine Controls & Pre-Op
  • Pre-operation inspection: TERMS (Travel, Engine, Rims/tracks, Mechanics, Safety)
  • Check engine oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant, fuel, track tension
  • ROPS (Roll-Over Protective Structure) required
  • FOPS (Falling Object Protective Structure) required
  • Seatbelt mandatory before operating
📖Blade Operation
  • Blade angle: side shift and tilt for contour work
  • Cut depth: lower blade to cut, raise to carry
  • Blade float: follows ground contour automatically
  • J-pattern: efficient pushing technique — push forward, drift to side, return
  • Backblading: reverse with blade for finishing
📖Grade & Slope Work
  • Reading grade stakes: cut/fill marks with elevation — hub and lath
  • Blue tops: grade stakes driven to finished subgrade elevation
  • Operating on slopes: work across slope if possible
  • Maximum safe slope for dozer typically 1:1 (45°)
  • Never turn on steep cross-slope
📖Soil & Site Conditions
  • Soil classification: rock, gravel, sand, silt, clay
  • Swell factor: loose material > bank material volume
  • Bulking/shrinkage factors used in earthwork calculations
  • Frozen ground: harder, different blade pressure needed
  • Soft/wet: wide track shoes or flotation tracks
🦺Safety & Site Rules
  • Exclusion zones: no personnel within 8m of moving equipment
  • Spotters required in blind zones
  • Overhead power lines: minimum 3m clearance
  • Underground utilities: locate before digging
  • WHMIS for fuels and lubricants; fire extinguisher on machine

Red Seal Certification

Study each topic below — these are the core knowledge areas tested in Year 1. Build a solid foundation here before advancing to Year 2 material.

📖GPS Machine Control
  • 3D GPS/total station based control: blade elevation automatically controlled
  • Design model loaded from survey data
  • Improves grade accuracy to ±25mm
  • Reduces over-excavation
  • Dual antenna GPS for blade tilt control; requires accurate site calibration
📐Earthwork Calculations
  • Bank cubic metres (BCM): material in ground
  • Loose cubic metres (LCM): after excavation
  • Compacted cubic metres (CCM): after compaction
  • Load factor = BCM/LCM; swell % = (LCM-BCM)/BCM × 100
  • Pay dirt typically in BCM
📖Soil Compaction
  • Compaction: increases density by reducing voids
  • Proctor test establishes maximum dry density at optimum moisture
  • Spec: typically 95% standard Proctor or 98% modified Proctor
  • Nuclear densometer measures in-place density
  • Lift thickness: max 300mm per compacted lift
📐Production Calculations
  • Dozer production = blade capacity × cycles/hour × efficiency
  • Blade capacity (m³) varies by blade type and material
  • Cycle time: push time + return time
  • Job efficiency factor: 0.75-0.83 for normal conditions
  • Match dozer size to push distance
📖Drainage & Slope Requirements
  • Positive drainage: minimum 1-2% grade away from structures
  • Crowning roads: 2-4% cross-fall for drainage
  • Catch basins and ditches: minimum 0.5% grade
  • Subgrade preparation: compacted, shaped, no soft spots or organic material
📖Environmental Considerations
  • Erosion and sediment control: silt fences, check dams, sediment ponds required
  • No equipment in watercourses without permit
  • Spill kits on machines
  • Fuel and hydraulic fluid leaks — immediate response required
  • Reclamation: restore disturbed areas per environmental plan
