Year 1 Fundamentals

Study each topic below — these are the core knowledge areas tested in Year 1. Build a solid foundation here before advancing to Year 2 material.

📖TLB Components
  • Tractor: four-wheel drive base
  • Front loader: bucket attached to loader arms, lift and tilt cylinders
  • Backhoe: boom, dipper, bucket — rear attachment
  • Stabilizers (outriggers): pads lower to ground for backhoe work
  • Swing: backhoe swings left/right
  • Typically rated 0.15–0.28 m³ bucket capacity
📖Machine Controls
  • Loader controls: loader joystick — boom raise/lower, bucket rollback/dump
  • Backhoe controls: two joysticks — boom + bucket; swing + stick
  • Pattern varies by manufacturer
  • Throttle: diesel engine RPM control
  • 4WD engagement
  • Stabilizer controls (independent left/right)
📖Loader Operations
  • Loading trucks: approach, crowd, curl, lift, position, dump
  • Pushing operations: blade down, push, raise at pile
  • Grading: level passes to spread material
  • Loading bank: start low, work up face
  • Parallel loading: approach parallel to material, single pass fill
  • Bucket not a lifting device — no rigging
📖Backhoe Digging
  • Lower stabilizers first: raise wheels slightly for stability
  • Swing clearance: check before swinging
  • Digging technique: lower boom, crowd stick, fill bucket
  • Trench depth: TLB limited vs excavator — typically max 4-5m
  • Bucket types: ditch cleaning, ditching, grading, general purpose
📖Utility Trench Work
  • 811 call before you dig: utility locate minimum 3 business days
  • Hand dig within 1m of marked utilities
  • Backfill: bedding material, initial backfill, final backfill — specified per utility
  • Compaction of backfill to prevent settlement
🦺Safety & Pre-Op
  • Pre-operational check: fluid levels, tire pressure, bucket pins, stabilizer pads
  • Swing radius: keep bystanders clear
  • Tip-over risk: don't carry raised loads
  • Park: lower bucket to ground, engage park brake
  • Overhead wires: minimum 3m clearance during all operations

Red Seal Certification

Study each topic below — these are the core knowledge areas tested in Year 1. Build a solid foundation here before advancing to Year 2 material.

📖Hydraulic System Maintenance
  • Filter changes: return filter, pressure filter, case drain — per hours (typically 500hr)
  • Hydraulic oil: ISO VG 46 or 68 depending on climate
  • Contamination monitoring: particle count ISO 4406
  • Hose inspection: cracks, chafing, fittings
  • Never loosen hydraulic fittings under pressure
🔧Ground Engagement Tool (GET)
  • Bucket teeth: replaceable TIG (tiger tooth) or twin tip
  • Adapters: hold teeth, replace when worn to 50%
  • Wear edge: bottom cutting edge
  • Bolt-on cutting edge: reversible
  • Inspect GET daily; worn teeth reduce production and increase fuel consumption
📖Soil Management
  • Soil classification determines excavation method: Type A (hard) to Type C (loose sandy)
  • Organic soils: weak bearing, excessive compression
  • Soil modification: lime or cement stabilization for unsuitable subgrade
  • Dewatering: wellpoints or sumps to control groundwater
📖Maintenance & Inspections
  • Daily greasing: bucket pins, boom pins, loader arms, stabilizers — typically 12-15 grease points
  • Track equivalent: front axle steering, differential
  • Engine maintenance: air filter, fuel filter per hours
  • Telematics: remote machine monitoring for hours, faults, location
📖Attachments
  • Auger: post holes, depth up to 3m — check underground utilities before
  • Breaker: concrete demolition — must have dedicated hydraulic circuit (high-flow)
  • Fork attachment: pallet handling — check rated capacity
  • Compactor: trench compaction
  • Thumbs: grab and place objects
📖Environmental & Urban Considerations
  • Rubber loader bucket pads: protect paved surfaces
  • Mats under stabilizer pads: distribute load, protect surfaces
  • Minimum noise operation: reduced throttle in residential areas
  • Spill containment kit on machine
  • Biodegradable hydraulic fluid option for environmentally sensitive sites
