Year 1 Exam Topics

Study each topic below — these are the core knowledge areas tested in Year 1. Build a solid foundation here before advancing to Year 2 material.

📖Process Variables
  • Temperature (T), pressure (P), flow (F), level (L), analytical (A) measurements
  • Primary elements convert process variable to signal
  • Transmitters convert to 4-20mA or HART digital signal
  • Span and zero defined by calibration range and design requirements
📖Pressure Measurement
  • Gauge pressure (psig/kPag): relative to atmosphere
  • Absolute (psia/kPaa): relative to vacuum reference
  • Differential (DP): difference between two pressure points
  • Strain gauge, capacitance cell, bourdon tube measurement principles
📖Temperature Measurement
  • Thermocouple: two dissimilar metals generate EMF proportional to temperature
  • RTD: resistance increases with temperature (Pt100 most common)
  • Thermowell: protects sensor in harsh process environments
  • RTD more accurate; TC faster response for transient detection
📖Flow Measurement
  • Differential pressure (orifice plate): Q ∝ √ΔP principle
  • Magnetic flowmeter: conductive fluids, no moving parts
  • Vortex: steam and gas applications; turbine: clean liquids only
  • Coriolis: mass flow and density measurement capability
📖Instrument Drawings
  • P&ID (Piping & Instrumentation Diagram): shows instruments and control loops
  • ISA 5.1 bubble notation: circle = field mounted, square = panel mounted
  • Tag number format: FT-101 = Flow Transmitter loop 101
  • Loop identification and instrument connectivity documentation
🦺Safety in the Field
  • Lockout/tagout before working on any instrument in service
  • Process isolation: close block valves, bleed pressure before removal
  • Static electricity — bond and ground near flammable process areas
  • Confined space entry procedures in vessels and process units

Red Seal Exam Topics

Study each topic below — these are the core knowledge areas tested in Year 1. Build a solid foundation here before advancing to Year 2 material.

📖PID Control
  • Proportional: output proportional to error; immediate response
  • Integral: eliminates offset (reset) over time
  • Derivative: responds to rate of change; anticipatory action
  • Tuning methods: Ziegler-Nichols, lambda tuning; Kp, Ti, Td parameters affect stability
📐Control Valve Sizing
  • Cv coefficient: flow through valve at 1 psi ΔP standard condition
  • Air-to-open vs air-to-close: fail-safe position critical
  • Equal percentage vs linear characteristic for process response
  • Trim selection by service conditions (corrosive, abrasive, cavitation)
🦺Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)
  • SIL (Safety Integrity Level) 1–4 risk reduction requirements
  • SIS independent from basic process control systems
  • SIS uses dedicated logic solver (Triconex, etc.)
  • IEC 61511 governs SIS in process industry applications
📖HART & Fieldbus
  • HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer): digital on 4-20mA signal
  • Foundation Fieldbus: two-wire digital communication standard
  • PROFIBUS: industrial digital protocol for control systems
  • Enables remote configuration, diagnostics, and asset management
📖Calibration & Uncertainty
  • Primary standard traceable to SI units
  • 5-point calibration: 0, 25, 50, 75, 100% of span
  • As-found/as-left records for compliance and trending
  • Measurement uncertainty: combine systematic and random error; NIST traceability
📖Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
  • DCS: process plant control with redundant processors and centralized HMI
  • PLC: sequential machine control and safety logic implementation
  • I/O modules: AI (4-20mA), AO, DI, DO for signal integration
  • Historian records process data; function blocks for control logic
