🔌Motorcycle Types & Classification

Standard: upright riding position; cruiser: low seat, forward controls
Sport: aggressive crouch, high RPM; touring: full fairing, high comfort
Dual-sport/adventure: on/off-road capable
Engine displacement: 250cc (learner) to 1800cc+; GVWR and payload ratings on all bikes

🚗Engine Types

Single cylinder: lightweight, simple
Parallel twin: smooth, popular; V-twin: characteristic sound, cruisers
Inline-four: high RPM, sport bikes
2-stroke (fewer parts, lighter) and 4-stroke (cleaner, more torque); liquid vs air cooling

📖Fuel Systems

Carburettor: main jet, needle jet, pilot circuit, float bowl — calibrated for altitude and temp
Fuel injection (FI): throttle body, injector, fuel pressure regulator, ECU
Idle air control valve; fuel pump: in-tank electric
Oxygen sensor (O2): closed loop control for proper AFR (14.7:1 stoichiometric)

📖Chassis & Frame

Backbone frame: top tube carries loads
Diamond frame: most common sport/standard; trellis frame: tube lattice, rigid and light
Rake (caster angle): head stock angle from vertical
Trail: distance from tire contact patch to steering axis ground point; affects steering stability

📖Suspension

Front fork: telescopic, inner tubes slide in outer
Cartridge forks: damping cartridge inside; preload, compression, rebound adjustable
Rear suspension: single shock (monoshock), linkage-activated
Swingarm: supports rear wheel; sag: static sag ~25mm race, 30-35mm street

🔍Fuel Injection Diagnostics

ECU: controls injection duration, ignition timing based on sensors
TPS (throttle position sensor), MAP (manifold absolute pressure), IAT (intake air temp), CKP (crankshaft position)
Scan tool for live data and codes
CO (carbon monoxide) check: <0.3% at idle; AFR tuning via CO meter or wideband O2

🔌Electrical Systems

12V negative ground standard
Stator: AC generator inside engine
Rectifier/regulator: converts AC to DC, regulates voltage; charging voltage: 13.8–14.8V at 3000 RPM
CAN bus on modern bikes; CAN diagnostics require bike-specific scan tools; wiring diagrams essential

📖Braking Systems

Disc brake: caliper, pads, rotor; pad inspection: minimum 2mm
ABS (Anti-lock Braking System): wheel speed sensors, modulator, ECU; ABS fault codes
Brake fluid: DOT 4 most common — hygroscopic, change every 2 years
Bleeding: pressure or vacuum method; drum brake: cam-actuated, inspect shoe lining

📖Final Drive Systems

Chain drive: chain, sprockets, chain lube and tension
Chain inspection: measure elongation over 12 links (service limit typically 158mm on 12-link for standard 428 chain)

Shaft drive: bevel gears, hypoid oil; sprocket wear: shark-tooth pattern

🚗Engine Overhaul

Valve clearance: shim-under-bucket (remove bucket, change shim) or screw-and-locknut
Measure with feeler gauge, adjust to spec
Valve timing: TDC marks on rotor, align cam sprocket marks
Piston rings: end gap measured in bore; cylinder honing: creates cross-hatch for ring seating

PMTC (Powersport & Motorcycle Technician Certification): Canadian interprovincial standard
Provincial licensing: varies — some provinces regulated
Inspection standards: provincial VIs (vehicle inspections) for motorcycles
