Year 1 Exam Topics

Study each topic below — these are the core knowledge areas tested in Year 1. Build a solid foundation here before advancing to Year 2 material.

🔧Pipe Materials & Specifications
  • Carbon steel (ASTM A53/A106), stainless 304/316, copper (ASTM B88), CPVC/PVC
  • Schedule numbers define wall thickness; nominal pipe size (NPS) vs actual OD
  • ASTM vs ASME designations for pressure vessel applications
  • Pressure ratings and temperature derating curves
🔧Pipe Fittings
  • Elbows (45°/90°/long radius), tees (straight/reducing), reducers (concentric/eccentric)
  • Socket weld vs butt weld vs threaded applications
  • Fitting allowances must be added to pipe cut lengths
  • Pressure ratings and material compatibility
🔧Pipe Hangers & Supports
  • Variable spring hangers for thermal movement; rigid hangers for no-movement lines
  • Hanger spacing per MSS SP-58/69 standards
  • Spring cans calculated for operating weight
  • Installation and support point selection
📖Flanges & Gaskets
  • ASME B16.5 flange classes (150/300/600/900/1500/2500)
  • Raised face vs flat face vs RTJ gasket surfaces
  • Spiral wound gaskets for high temp/pressure applications
  • Bolt torque sequence (star pattern) for proper sealing
⚙️Pipe Joining Methods
  • Butt weld (full penetration), socket weld (fillet), threaded (NPT taper)
  • Grooved (Victaulic) and soldering (type L/K copper) techniques
  • Specific prep requirements for each joining method
  • Quality and inspection requirements per applicable codes
🦺Safety & PPE
  • Hot work permits required for welding/cutting operations
  • Steam burns — never stand at valve discharge
  • WHMIS for pipe dope, flux, solvents, and other materials
  • Confined space entry procedures and hazard awareness

Red Seal Exam Topics

Study each topic below — these are the core knowledge areas tested in Year 1. Build a solid foundation here before advancing to Year 2 material.

📖ASME B31.1 Power Piping
  • Governs steam, feedwater, drain lines in power plants
  • Hydro test at 1.5× MAWP with regulatory oversight
  • Required documentation: isometrics, weld maps, NDE reports
  • Design and operating pressure classifications
📖ASME B31.3 Process Piping
  • Governs chemical, petroleum, industrial process applications
  • Fluid categories (D, normal, high-pressure, high-purity)
  • Examination levels A, B, C, D for weld qualification
  • Design and operating parameters specific to process service
📖Steam Traps
  • Float & Thermostatic (F&T): continuous condensate removal
  • Thermodynamic (TD): disc opens and closes by pressure differential
  • Inverted bucket: riding on steam, dumps on condensate
  • Selection depends on pressure differential and condensate load
📖Expansion & Flexibility
  • Thermal expansion: carbon steel expands ~12mm per 10m per 100°C ΔT
  • Expansion loops, bellows, offset bends for movement absorption
  • Anchor and guide design critical for system integrity
  • Stress analysis and design calculations
📖Hydrostatic & Pneumatic Testing
  • Hydro preferred — less energy if failure occurs
  • Test pressure = 1.5× design for B31.1 and B31.3
  • Pneumatic at 1.1× design with extra precautions and controls
  • Hold time minimum 10 minutes; documentation requirements
📖Valve Types & Applications
  • Gate valve: fully open/closed only; globe: throttling control
  • Check: prevents backflow; ball: quarter-turn shutoff
  • Butterfly: large diameter low-pressure; safety/relief: set per code
  • Selection criteria based on service conditions
