Year 1 Exam Topics

Study each topic below — these are the core knowledge areas tested in Year 1. Build a solid foundation here before advancing to Year 2 material.

💡Electrical Fundamentals
  • Ohm's Law: V=IR; Power: P=VI calculations
  • Three-phase power: P=√3×VL×IL×PF fundamentals
  • Distribution voltage: 4kV–27.6kV typical ranges
  • Transmission: 115kV–500kV; transformer ratios change voltage levels
📖Distribution System Components
  • Overhead conductors: ACSR (aluminum conductor steel reinforced), AAC, AAAC
  • Distribution transformers: single-phase and three-phase operation
  • Cutouts (fused disconnect); reclosers for automatic fault restoration
  • Capacitor banks for power factor correction and voltage support
📖Wood Poles & Structures
  • Pole classes (1–7): Class 1 = largest; Class 7 = smallest
  • Douglas fir, western red cedar, southern yellow pine treated
  • Pentachlorophenol or creosote preservative treatments
  • Setting depth = 10% of pole length + 600mm minimum
📖Climbing & Working Aloft
  • Climbers (gaffs): must be sharpened and inspected before use
  • Body belt vs full harness — harness required for free fall potential
  • Aerial lift trucks (bucket trucks): insulated boom rated for voltage
  • Never climb beyond secondary attachment point; fall protection essential
🌍Grounding & Bonding
  • Personal protective grounds (PPGs) create equipotential zone
  • Grounds applied and removed in specific safe sequence
  • Ground sets rated for fault current of system being worked on
  • Every worker in zone must have individual grounds connected
🦺OH&S & Electrical Safety
  • Limits of Approach: unqualified person 3m from energized HV
  • Qualified worker with bare hand contact at rated voltage only
  • Approach distances per provincial electrical safety regulations
  • Always assume lines are live; don't rely on visual inspection

Red Seal Exam Topics

Study each topic below — these are the core knowledge areas tested in Year 1. Build a solid foundation here before advancing to Year 2 material.

📖Underground Distribution
  • XLPE and EPR cable for URD (underground residential distribution)
  • Cable pulling: maximum pulling tension, minimum bend radius limits
  • Direct bury vs conduit systems installation methods
  • Cable splicing and terminating for safe operation
🦺Switching & System Protection
  • Radial distribution: single feed, simple but no redundancy
  • Looped distribution: fed from two points for improved reliability
  • Switching order: always open load side first, close load side last
  • Operator mimic board and switching sequences for system operations
Transformer Connections
  • Delta-wye most common for distribution systems
  • Wye-delta for some industrial and specialized applications
  • Delta-delta for balanced loads and redundancy scenarios
  • Polarity dot convention; parallel transformers must match voltage, impedance, polarity
🦺Line Protection
  • Overcurrent protection: fuses, reclosers, sectionalizers
  • Recloser: automatically recloses after transient fault (typically 3 attempts)
  • Coordination: downstream device must clear before upstream operates
  • Time-current curves (TCCs) for protection device selection
📖Conductor Stringing & Sagging
  • Sagging: tensioning conductor to design sag at given temperature
  • Creep: conductor elongation over time (aluminum stretches)
  • Ruling span: equivalent span for sag calculations
  • Transverse and vertical loading per CAN/CSA-C22.3 No.1 standard
📖Transmission Line Maintenance
  • Live line tools (hot sticks): minimum approach distance maintained
  • Barehand (live-line) work at EHV: worker at same potential as conductor
  • Tower climbing: fall arrest system must be used above 1.2m
  • Corona and RIV measurements for monitoring line condition
